Kostrena is an old and popular coastal town, first mentioned at the beginning of the 15th century. It first gained municipal independence in 1874, but retained it only briefly, for just two years. It is divided into two parts, Sv. Lucija and Sv. Barbara, named after the two churches located in the area. It is situated in the immediate vicinity of Rijeka, framed by the bay of Martinšćica and Bakarski zaljev.
