Kostrena is an old and popular coastal town, first mentioned at the beginning of the 15th century. It gained its first municipal independence in 1874, but retained it only briefly, for just two years. It is divided into two parts, Sv. Lucija and Sv. Barbara, named after the two churches located in the area.

Kostrena is situated in the immediate vicinity of Rijeka, framed by the bay of Martinšćica and Bakarski zaljev. The Kostrena peninsula is about 10 kilometres long and slopes gently down towards the coast. Along its entire length are beautiful beaches visited by thousands of bathers during the summer.
