Bakar is a town and port in Croatia, located in Bakarski zaljev, and is part of Primorsko-goranska županija. It lies on the northern coast of the Adriatic Sea and covers an area of 12,560 ha and nine settlements.

The town is situated on a hill in the northwestern part of the bay of the same name and is surrounded by hills reaching up to 300 m above sea level. The entire area is rich in drinking water springs and is covered with deciduous forest and low vegetation, while most of it is still bare karst.

The historic core, declared a cultural monument in 1968, is divided into two parts: the older, upper, so-called "Grad", where the settlement developed surrounded by city walls, and the lower part consisting of the areas "Zagrad" and "Primorje".

The climate is Mediterranean, so the architecture also corresponds to the Mediterranean style of construction, with many winding, narrow, steep and stepped streets and small squares. The Adriatic Highway (M2, E65) passes just above the town, and to the northwest, about 15 km away, lies the city of Rijeka.
