Vrbnik is one of the best-known Croatian places, known for its Glagolitic heritage and the famous folk song of distinctive melody and content, interpreted and arranged in a number of versions, Vrbniče nad morem.

Like other old fortified settlements on the island, Vrbnik is located high up, at almost 50 m above sea level, in a distinctive spot on a cliff that literally plunges into the sea. Along with Šilo in Dobrinjština, it is the only larger settlement on the eastern coast of the island of Krk.

It is first mentioned in 1100. The inhabitants were mostly engaged in agriculture, and to a lesser extent in seafaring and fishing. Today, the best-known product of Vrbničko polje and Vrbnik is the golden-yellow wine Žlahtina, famous on a wider Croatian scale as well.

According to the stories of older locals, before the wine gained fame, cereals were grown in the field to feed numerous families. In such conditions, vines were cultivated along the edges of the field because there was no market, and wine was produced only for their own needs.

Because of its rich history, Vrbnik is called the cradle of literacy among Croats and is certainly one of the oldest settlements on the island of Krk. The settlement is dominated by narrow streets, and this is where the narrowest street in the world is located.
