Zemunik was first mentioned as Se-lmeni as early as the 13th century. In the 14th century, there was a fortress of King Louis I of Anjou there, when he came to the aid of the people of Zadar against the Venetians in 1346, and documents from 1368 show that Zemunik was owned by the Zadar commune and that meetings of representatives of Zadar and the Croatian Kingdom were held at the then Church of Saint James. In 1409, with the sale of Dalmatia, Zemunik came under Venetian rule. During the Turkish incursions, Venice repaired and built a number of fortresses, so Zemunik was also built, which at that time was owned by the Venier family (after whom today's Vinjerac is named). An archival document indicates that a military fortress, a revelin (an enclosed area for housing people and livestock), and a moat around all of it were built. From 1570, Zemunik was under Turkish rule, and they built a strong fortress there that had the status of a kasaba. In 1647 and 1683, most of Zemunik was destroyed and burned down. After the Turks left, Zemunik became the seat of the serdar from 1729, who was the link between the Venetian authorities and the people.
