The medieval town of Buje is located in the northwestern part of the Istrian peninsula, on top of a hill overlooking the sea, the surrounding hills, vineyards and olive groves for which this area is known. The proximity to the sea, the influence of the Mediterranean and mild continental climate, the tradition in agricultural production, hunting and tourism, the hilly landscape and the preserved and unpolluted nature make the area of the Town of Buje one of the most attractive areas of the Istrian peninsula. The Town of Buje is located near the border with Slovenia and is known for its vineyards, olive oil and views of the sea and the Istrian interior.
The development of the Town of Buje is focused on sustainability through the Strategic Development Plan 2022-2029, with an emphasis on economic progress, social cohesion, environmental sustainability and infrastructure modernization. Key goals include encouraging local potential, improving quality of life and more efficient use of resources.
Buje has a rich history. In Roman times there was a small settlement here, and there are also traces of life from earlier periods in the wider area. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, it was under barbarian rule, and shortly afterwards within the Patriarchate of Aquileia. This administration was succeeded by the Republic of Venice, during whose rule the bell tower and the church of St. Servulus were built. After the fall of the Republic of Venice, Buje was briefly under French rule and in the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, which built the railway station that still exists today, although it now houses the fire station. After the end of the First World War, Istria and Buje came under Italian administration. During the Second World War, the resistance movement was active in Istria, and after the war Buje ended up in the Free Territory of Trieste, which was partly under Allied control (the UK and the USA) and partly under the Yugoslav army. The status of the town was settled in 1954, when it was agreed that the northern part of the Territory, Trieste and its surroundings, would belong to Italy, and the southern part to Yugoslavia, and, after its breakup, Koper to Slovenia, while the towns of Umag, Buje and Novigrad would belong to Croatia.
