The story of Kozala is a wonderful example of the transformation of a rocky green hill located almost directly above the northern walls of Rijeka (depending on the author, period, and placement of the name “Kozala”), where venturing out once meant danger, but more often the pleasure of work and drink, as this was an area of vineyards. The first mention of Kozala dates back to the 15th century, precisely as one of the locations of the city vineyards, and at the height of the Monarchy it became an area of expanding bourgeois villas, courtyards adorned with exotic botanical species, and new city streets lined with historicist and Secession-style buildings, forming a “centre outside the centre” during the Kingdom of Italy, centred around a gathering place for fascists and a church building stylistically unprecedented in Rijeka at that time.
